The Secret of Mindfulness

The Secret of Mindfulness

*Have you ever tried to sift through the massive amounts of data out there regarding mindfulness?

*Wouldn't it be nice if someone actually explained out it worked?

*Well today is your lucky day.

What is mindfulness?

*Mindfulness is a technique to help calm your emotions and your mind.

*It can be done in a variety of different settings and done in different ways.

*One technique may not be a one size fits all.

*You have to experiment to find out what works best for you.

Things to do for beginners

*If this is your first rodeo, you need to find a place that you can calm yourself.

*After all, the saying 'Practice makes perfect' rings very true with this.

*The more that you practice your routine, the easier it will be when you have to use it in stressful situations.

What to do:

*So, this is what I call the countdown.

*Remember me talking about it in previous blog posts?

*It does wonders for people, and it can work for you too.

The Countdown:

*You are going to do a count down with your senses.

*Take a look around you, what are five things you can see. Mentally or verbally, state these.

*Close your eyes, what are four things you can touch (i.e. the feel of your clothes, chair, weight of your hair etc).

*With your eyes still closed, what are three things you can hear (i.e. motors, passing cars outside, etc).

*With your eyes closed, what are two things you can smell (i.e. coffee, perfume, cologne, etc).

*Finally, what is one thing that you can taste.

*After you complete this exercise, take a moment to notice the way your body feels.

Why it works:

It works, because it is taking your brain out of fight or flight mode and honing in on your surroundings.

*It distracts you and helps you to focus.

*By distracting yourself, you are teaching your body to calm down.
